The Carolina Moon operation was an attempt to drop a large 8 foot diameter bomb with 5000 pounds of explosives to knock out the bridge. Exact reason of loss is truly not known, but all eight crew were killed in action.

Crashed at Cape Romanzof, Alaksa, some time in early 1985 (January or February). Crew was from the 317th TAW (some reports say a crew from SOS out of Florida). Some repairs made on site to get the aircraft flying again. Was sent for depot level maintenance and then the 115th AS as replacement for 61-2373 that was crashed in Kentucky.

On this day, the aircraft took off twice on training missions and returned with engine trouble. After the two training flights the status was changed to transport 38 personnel from Taipei, Taiwan.
Off course, crashed into mountain. This incident occurred in dense fog which possibly led to a navigation error. It took nearly 8 days to locate the crash site, 43 passengers and crew were lost.
