Was mortar shelled, but repaired. The call had come in to Det 1, 834th AD that an aircraft had been mortared. She took some mortar hits after landing that destroyed the left main landing gear tires and left nose tire. Flak also destroyed the number 2 engine and the hydraulics for the elevators and cargo ramp. There were shrapnel hits all over the left side of the aft fuselage and tail. Most of the flight crew had departed on another aircraft prior to our arrival but the aircraft commander remained. The Army discussed destroying the aircraft, since it had been "quiet" at their camp for a while and this C-130 was now a "mortar magnet", but the A/C wouldn't hear of it. The damaged tires and wheels were replaced, the torn up outer gear door removed, some tubing and hoses from the cargo ramp hydraulics scavenged to get the elevators working again, closing the ramp with a forklift and stripped out all the extra weight from the cargo compartment to lighten her up. The aircraft took off on 3 engines.
