Stationed at Kadena AB, Japan since 1972, the squadron was located at Clark Air Base, Philippines from 1981 to 1982 before returning to Japan. Squadron has always flown the MC-130.

Converted to the AC-130U in 1995 at Hurlburt Field, Florida.

Flew the C-130 from 1968 to 1977 for Special Ops in Germany. During those years was joined by the UH-1 Huey from 1971 to 1973. Moved from Germany to RAF Alconbury, United Kingdom on October 1, 1992. Joining the MC-130H in 2013 was the CV-22 Osprey.

Formed with the C-130E(I) during 1968 at Nha Trang AB, South Vietnam. Disbanded on October 31, 1970 until standing up again on October 1, 1992 at Hurlburt Field, Florida with the MC-130H.

Squadron moved to New Mexico in 2009. But since inception with the C-130, it has always flown the AC-130 gunship variant. First with the AC-130A at Ubon Royal Thai AFB, Thailand in 1968 and then Korat Royal Thai AFB, Thailand in 1974. When returned CONUS in 1975 the 16th SOS called Hurlburt Field, Florida home.

Originally with the HC-130 along with HH-53s, was designated 67th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron until June 1, 1988 when the squadron was split. The HC-130s remained with the 67th and designated Special Operations Squadron and the HH-53s were assigned the 21st Special Operations Squadron.

Started flying the C-130 in 2006 with the MC-130W until 2012 when the squadron converted to the AC-130W.

Originally active with the AC-130s on July 1, 1970 as the 415th Special Operations Training Squadron. Wore the AH tail code along with the rest of the wing beginning in 1972 until June 30, 1975 when the squadron disbanded. The 4450th Tactical Squadron at Tonopah, Nevada flew the F-117 from 1979 till 1989 when it renumbered the 415th Tactical Fighter Squadron until disbanded in 1993. Activated as the 415th Special Operations Squadron on September 22, 2011. At that time it absorbed personnel and equipment of 58th Special Operations Wing Detachment 1 at Kirtland AFB, New Mexico.
