Squadron moved to New Mexico in 2009. But since inception with the C-130, it has always flown the AC-130 gunship variant. First with the AC-130A at Ubon Royal Thai AFB, Thailand in 1968 and then Korat Royal Thai AFB, Thailand in 1974. When returned CONUS in 1975 the 16th SOS called Hurlburt Field, Florida home.

Originally active with the AC-130s on July 1, 1970 as the 415th Special Operations Training Squadron. Wore the AH tail code along with the rest of the wing beginning in 1972 until June 30, 1975 when the squadron disbanded. The 4450th Tactical Squadron at Tonopah, Nevada flew the F-117 from 1979 till 1989 when it renumbered the 415th Tactical Fighter Squadron until disbanded in 1993. Activated as the 415th Special Operations Squadron on September 22, 2011. At that time it absorbed personnel and equipment of 58th Special Operations Wing Detachment 1 at Kirtland AFB, New Mexico.
