The 39th Rescue Squadron took possession of their first, brand new HC-130J Combat King II aircraft April 2 when 920th Rescue Wing maintenance and aircrew brought the aircraft home to Patrick Air Force Base, Florida, while making history in their efforts.

Lockheed Martin delivered the U.S. Air Force Reserve’s first HC-130J Combat King II to a crew from the 920th Rescue Wing (RQW) from Patrick Air Force Base, Florida. This HC-130J will be operated by the 39th Rescue Squadron (RQS), which is part of the 920th RQW.

Last Air Force Wing to bid farewell to legacy of Combat Rescue aircraft

The 920th Rescue Wing is celebrating the legacy of its HC-130P/N combat-rescue fleet as the wing expects to receive a replacement fleet of HC-130J in the Spring of 2020. This new airframe will not only replace the legacy HC-130 fleet but with its arrival also comes the elimination of two aviation career fields: Flight Engineer and Airborne Mission Systems Specialist.

The 920th Rescue Wing commander, Col. Kurt Matthews, and members of a hand-selected aircrew flew the wing’s last HC-130N King, Aug. 7 from Patrick Air Force Base, Florida, to the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona, to be decommissioned.

Rescue airmen save two German citizens stranded at sea

In a concerted effort from July 7, and into the early hours of July 8, 2017, approximately 80 Airmen and four aircraft assigned to the 920th Rescue Wing successfully rescued two German citizens whose vessel caught fire approximately 500 nautical miles off the east coast of southern Florida.
