12 Su-24's leased from Russia in exchange for wheat and beef. The British are expected to review their air defence capabilities in the Falklands as a response.

In all, not much of a threat. The big question is the condition the airframes are in, as they are expected to be ex-Russian Air Force airframes that have been retired. When they arrive, they could well be for better or for worst, scrap metal.

They did an exercise back in the 80's rolled out an EA6, had a crack at a Tico. No dice. So they trotted out a full flight. No go.

Four EA6s radiating and the damn thing isn't even degraded.

Final attempt, rolled in with a 707 full of gear and finally, some success, with the radar on the Tico at least degraded but still capable of tracking.

Ain't no substitute for cubes as they say - and up to 4Mw of radiated power vs a few kw of something hanging off an SU? Uh..Nah..

I believe the article would need to be more "true" to the sources they quote and not add things that are not there.

In the voltaire news article, you have the paragraph below with a source marked [1]

"On 10 April 2014, the USS Donald Cook entered the waters of the Black Sea and on 12 April a Russian Su-24 tactical bomber flew over the vessel triggering an incident that, according to several media reports, completely demoralized its crew, so much so that the Pentagon issued a protest [1]."

The source of the paragraph is listed in the article as :

[1] “Pentagon Protests Russian Jet Buzzing Antimissile Ship in Black Sea”, Global Security Newswire, 15 April 2014.

If you read the article in the Global Security Newswire, there is no mention of any crew demoralization. In fact, it is an article stating that the Su24 flew a lot of times over the US naval vessel and the US protested the overflights.

So the part of the crew demoralization is added by the voltaire author/authors (Which is my next puzzling question, who is the author of this article?).

In any case, it might be prudent to take the article with a grain of salt considering that the article is misrepresenting sources.

On the case of Argentina getting SU-24, this is an attack aircraft. I thought Argentina is looking for a new MRCA type aircraft? (Thus the interest with the Grippen) Wouldn't it be more logical for Russia to propose the Su-27?

Apparently the story is a crock according to the Argentine government.
If it were for real then its the weapons the Fencer can carry which would cause their neighbours concern and of course the UK forces covering the Falklands. The Su-24 could easily strike targets on the Islands without the need to IFR if the Arg Government was that way inclined and frankly, they are not.

I think this is a fake news report with only denials doing the rounds thus far. They must be very broke to offer Beef and Grain just to "lease" an old airframe. My God with its complexity ie swing wing set up and age how would they pay for maintaining a dozen of them? Now, weapons you cannot lease so what are they going to be able to afford to put on the pylons? Watermelons? lol
