In Memoriam

"Bullit" was a true officer and a gentleman, he was a wonderful friend and made everyone around him laugh.....

David loved to fly, it was all he ever wanted to do. He loved his country and his family and friends and would have done anything for them. He is truly missed.

Sir, I gave you your last ride out to your jet. I still remember my last words to you, "I still owe you 30 bucks Captain, I'll have it for you when you get back".

I dropped you off, and went to the bank and to lunch. When I got back to the duty desk, I was told what happened. Trying to rememer anything else that happened later that day is hard, somethings I remember, some are hazy, most of them.....

You were were one of the very rare GOOD pilots. By that, I mean you didn't talk down to us enlisted types, or treat us like one your personal servants or some kind of sub-human creature. You treated us with a respect. You treated us as humans, and if were going to get stuck in a bad place, for a year, we may as well make the best of it.

I never got to say, "Thanks"! I hope it didn't come too late.

By the way, I still owe you that 30 bucks.

Pat, Ms. Bodine-Shah, Staff Sergeant...thank you for your kind words about my good friend Dave. We met our first year at Purdue and he left us a short 12 years later. But I have so many memories of those few years together, now 32 years later! I think about the boy several times a week. He will always be that smiling 30 year old fighter pilot ready to play football, close a few bars or play his bass. Miss you buddy.

Bullet, we flew together, laughed a whole lot and played more than a few dice games (4,5,6 anyone?) during our shared tours in two TAC squadrons in the 70's. All these years later, I remember those as some of the best times in my life, and you are the first guy I think of when I take myself back to those years.

I also remember exactly the moment I heard the crushing news of your last flight. I think it was the first time I really ever sensed our mortality; a sad, disorienting moment for a young fighter jock.

Your flying pals are all much older and grayer now, but you, my friend, will be ever young.You are still loved, buddy, and always fondly remembered.
