Currently based at Dyess AFB, Texas but has moved several times. Original C-130A operations were at Evreux-Fauville AB, France starting December 6, 1957 at the 40th Troop Carrier Squadron. Moved to Lockbourne AFB, Ohio during June 1964. Re-designated the 40th Tactical Airlift Squadron on May 1, 1967. During August of 1971 the squadron moved to Pope AFB, North Carolina. Re-designated the 40th Airlift Squadron on January 1, 1992 and deactivated on July 16, 1993. On October 1, 1993 the squadron reactivated at Dyess AFB, Texas.
