Am doing a report on the SU-24. Though it may look alike the F-111, it is nothing like a F-111 and its mission seem quite different due to its short range. Apparently originally it was supposed to be a fixed wing jump jet for ground attack, a sort of big Harrier.
My question is regarding the Ground control box in the aircraft. It seems like ground pilots could take over the entire flight and direct the plane (even bring it to a landing approach within an altitude of 100 ft), the SU-24 pilot being only a glorified air datalink technician. One of ground command unit system is the Raguda-75.
The Russians made a “Hero”/Sky movie about their pilot getting shot down by the Turks. Seems to me he could have had the flight taken over by one of those ground stations sending him to his provocative death. Is it how Russians fight? Do their export version have a similar system?
