B-52 Will Get at Least One New Designation With Radar, Engine Upgrades

The B-52H will be redesignated the B-52J or possibly B-52K when it gets a new radar and new engines, but the Air Force hasn’t yet decided what will constitute the new B-52 variant, according to Col. Louis Ruscetta, senior materiel leader for the program. The program has also developed a new estimate of what the re-engining will cost and is about to submit it to Congress, but Ruscetta said reports of a 50 percent overrun are far overstated. In fact, he said he sees no overruns on the horizon.

I and O normally won't be used to avoid confusion with the numbers 1 and 0.

It is f***king nuts that the Buff is going to outlast the Bone and the B-2. I would guess that if the Bone was nuclear capable it would be in service longer.

The B-1s were built to fly a limited number of hours, like the F-117. Never drop non-nuclear weapons! You need to go back and review the politics of the B-1. I remember during post GW1 and member of congress berating a USAF General. The B-1s were a waste of money as they were not used. The General read back the congressional record of the same member; claiming performing conventional weapons certification was a waste of time and money. Since the aircraft would just sit on nuclear alert and never use non nuclear weapons The B-1s never got convectional weapons certification until the 1990s.

The B-52 like the KC-135 were way over built, by modern standards. When I was at Tinker a Boeing engineer did a 707 verse 757 presentation on how things have changed. The 757-200F could carry 15 pallets verse 707-300F 13, the 707 was 33,000 heavier then the 757, OEW. Almost all was structures. That is the "secrete" to the longevity of the 52s and 135s.

A new Boeing image shows the B-52 cockpit will take on a cleaner, more streamlined appearance after the bomber completes a program of some of the most substantive changes in its 60-year history.

The image is still considered notional but will likely be close to the final version of how the BUFF’s “front office” will look, starting in the middle of this decade.



Air Force officials have said they are contemplating re-naming the B-52H the B-52I or B-52J after it receives new radars and engines, because the aircraft will be substantially different enough after the upgrades to warrant a new designator and to keep clearer records of maintenance and pilot hours.

This was covered last year, they want to get rid of the downward ejection seats. It was in an ACES 6 story about new seats are the old MBs are becoming unsupportable.

A new image from Boeing shows how the B-52H will look after a series of modifications that the Air Force has said are significant enough to warrant re-designating the aircraft as the B-52J or K. The image was rendered from a digital prototyping model and is likely to closely resemble the final version.
