Went to my friends at VXE-6.
"Bernt Balchen, the famous polar pilot, was involved with development of what became the LC-130". They included a photo of him at Lockheed in the 1950s inspecting the first skis for the C-130A. So, it appears they were built in-house at Lockheed.
VXE-6 (ok, VX-6) didn't have LC-130As - presumably those flew the DEW line. Another OAE (Old Antarctic Explorer) noted that the skis on the As were not interchangeable with those on F/R/H.
I am alternately proud/disturbed that three of the LC-130Rs I flew in the mid-eighties are still flying with the 109th as LC-130H.

Greetings All,
Retired (2016) Senior here, from 176 OSS/AFE, AK ANG, Elmendorf AFB, Anchorage.
Re the previously published article asking for input for the "17th TAS FIREBIRDS, at Elmendorf AFB, AK, (1971-1975), I have a lot of photos & some historical anecdotes to offer from that period. My dad was a 17th TAS nav, retiring in 1975, when the C-130D/D-6s were changed for E-models (MAC took over AAC/21st Comp WG, including the four HC-130s -- two were AR-capable -- and HH-3s). The 17th's ski-birds went to NYANG at Schenectady (109th), who assumed that mission. (I think there's a 17th ski-bird sitting at Pima Air Museum, AZ -- a fantastic, worth the trip place! -- which I saw in their back lot in 2004.)
Let me know of any interest-- happy to share it all. Press On, -- Dana Nichols

Great! I have approx 50 digital images of 17th birds at EDF, plus some of a Navy/Science Foundation LC-130 with ice-mapping rigging, which came through EDF around 1979/80. I'm NOT smooth with tech/x-ferring images via e-mail, etc. -- happy to put it all on a flash-drive and mail it to you, no worries, and delighted to offer something to accurate history. I just saw a "Wikiwand -- 71st Rescue Sq." posting, showing one of my (dad's 1971-75 era) 17th TAS C-130D ski birds, -70490, on the ramp... not an "71st LC-130" as captioned; nice, colorful photo, though. I don't know how to go about correcting stuff people upload there.
If you wish, please feel free to contact me on my (user name) e-mail -- let me know where I can mail a flash-drive (postage and drive are on me -- no prob), or possibly answer questions from back then.
