Missiles on Marine Corps KC-130 loading ramp

Feel free to discuss anything here - as long as it is C-130 related.

Hey everyone,

New user - came here through the Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/c130.net

I was looking at the photograph below, which according to the caption shows "aviation ordnance technician for Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 252, straps a rack that can contain up to 10 Griffin missiles onto the loading ramp of a KC-130J. The missile rack is part of the newly developed weapons Harvest HAWK, turning a transport aircraft into an attack and air support platform.".

Two questions :
1. Are these Griffin missiles now in operation?
2. Does anyone have a picture of the one of these missiles actually being fired from the ramp of a C-130?

thanks!

Hi Jim

Welcome! BTW, that page on facebook is run by us.

That's an interesting set up. I too wondered about seeing footage of this deployed/tested.

Thanks for those links guys!

Looking at those photos, I'm just wondering how those missiles get fired. I can see forward-firing missiles, I can see sidewards-shooting guns on an AC-130 - but how do you aim and fire backwards-firing missiles? Or do the missiles just drop out, then spin forward before firing?

The Griffin missile integrated on the Marine Corps' C-130 Harvest Hawk is the "Griffin A" version (AGM-176A). While the Griffin B (BGM-176B) is a forward-firing missile, the "A" is an aft-eject missile.

Here you can see it in action:

Neat. So the missile is ejected backwards, and fired when it clears the aircraft. Thanks for posting!

While further reading up on the subject, I came across this image of a Marine Corps KC-130 with Griffin (and Hellfire) killmarks! Thought I'd share. I bet this tanker has more killmarks than the fighters it refuels :-)

USMC Gunnery Sgt. Brian D. Cook, the aviation ordnance chief with Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron VMGR-252, exits the "Harvest Hawk" equipped Lockheed KC-130J Hercules (BuNo 167110). Note the mission markers indicating 39 launches of AGM-114 Hellfire missiles and 10 launches of Griffin missiles. [USMC photo by Cpl. Samantha H. Arrington]

Are there any missles mounted on the IFR Pod mounts. I know that some of the "A" models had them for research work?

The marines have some they drop from the ramp and some mounted outboard on the wing, could be at the station the IFR pods normally go.
