It has movable intake to increase air flow during high thrust settings. But the delta wing is too heavy. The landing gear doors as well as the intake has to be removed during the verical landing tests, to reduce weight.

That is a jet screen, the narrow slit in front of vertical nozzles, to separate hot gas from the intake, but that is not enough.

They also had to do the STOVL tests at Patuxent River because Edwards was too hot and high. The X-35 stayed at Edwards.

How so? The hot part of the F-35B's exhaust is the rear nozzle.
Whereas on the X-32, almost everything goes out the main nozzles. That can't be hotter than the X/F-35's rear nozzle unless the engine runs hotter. Also, I thought the F-32B would have used a higher bypass version of the engine to increase STOVL thrust which would have made the mix a bit cooler.

F-35B engine extracts a significant portion of the power to drive the liftfan, thus the vectoring nozzle exhaust is a lot cooler. Also the exhaust velocity is reduced.

X-32B roll/yaw nozzles draw gas from hot exhaust, not fan bypass. X-35B uses vectoring nozzle and liftfan vanes to control pitch and yaw, seems a lot more sophisticated than the "direct" lift.
