Due to a lack of communication it is believed that Russian artillery has targeted its own troops.
Air defences have also engaged friendly aircraft as the Khibniy system of electronic countermeasures that is supposed to protect Russian pilots has interfered with their own planes.

The authors of the report argue that the issue of friendly fire and the way that Moscow's troops have easily been deceived by Kyiv are major issues.
They said: "Fratricide has been a widespread problem for the Russian forces during their invasion of Ukraine.

One incident illustrated Moscow's tactical weakness when Ukrainian forces disguised their own airbase by taking pictures of blown-up hangars.

They then printed the resultant patterns on large sheets and then draped them over fighter jets as a form of camouflage.

Confused about how Ukrainian pilots were still able to fly given the apparent destruction of their airbase Russian forces speculated that Ukraine may have built an underground lair where pilots could take off.

The report complied by the Royal United Services Institute included testimony from senior figures in the Ukrainian military.

The US is working with some Middle Eastern countries (Qatar and Oman) to move a number of their air defense systems (NASAMS) to Ukraine, the CEO of Raytheon Technologies Greg Hayes said.
It takes two years to build NASAMS because of the lead time required to buy electronic components and rocket motors

UKR postion around Bakhmut is worsening. RUS position around Svatove - Kreminna is worsening. What is the calculation here?

If captured Bakhmut, RUS still have a number of places to contend with before they can reach the big prices of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk. If lost Svatove - Kreminna, the RUS grouping in the northern Luhansk region will be cut off from the Donbas battlefield. They will have to go south to Luhansk city before turning west.

UKR seemingly is not in a hurry to relief the predicament of Bakhmut. To where are the troops released from the Kherson compaign going? In this war, questions are far more than answers.

I am just speaking as a knuckle dragging charcoal on a cave wall calculations layman

That being said, Ukraine has suprised the world with how they have been able to fend off and push back the numerically larger Russian force (with the aid of western arms and supplies). So much so that Russian military had to "call up" their reserve forces to make up for how many losses they sustained up to this point. Despite their losses, the Russian military is still a larger force than what Ukraine currently has. Both sides are taking heavy losses but Ukraine is trying to be as smart as they can defending where they can and taking back when and where it favors them the best. Ukrainian military command and leadership appears to be very calculated, they're willing to let a few places fall to take ground where it could have a bigger impact in the long run.

As for the Russian military no doubt their higher command and leadership has drank too much of their own koolaid and now they're paying the price for it. They are paying for all the internal corruption and poor training. They have lost more generals and higher ups during the summer and fall than they are willing to admit. They have been beaten back so badly that the "little green men" operation they conducted in 2014 seems more like a lucky shot than actual skill when you look at how things are going now. At large their tactics still suck but on a micro level you're seeing some changes to how they are fighting yet those changes have been too small and too slow to impact the rest of the force.

Maybe this just me being optimistically niave.
I hope and pray both sides find their humanity and call for a temporary truce/cease fire for Christmas like what was done in 1914...

This would be not just a gift for themselves but for the world in general.
