The Department of Defense has authorized the release of three unclassified Navy videos, one taken in November 2004 and the other two in January 2015, which have been circulating in the public domain after unauthorized releases in 2007 and 2017. The U.S. Navy previously acknowledged that these videos circulating in the public domain were indeed Navy videos. After a thorough review, the department has determined that the authorized release of these unclassified videos does not reveal any sensitive capabilities or systems, and does not impinge on any subsequent investigations of military air space incursions by unidentified aerial phenomena. DOD is releasing the videos in order to clear up any misconceptions by the public on whether or not the footage that has been circulating was real, or whether or not there is more to the videos. The aerial phenomena observed in the videos remain characterized as "unidentified." The released videos can be found at the Naval Air Systems Command FOIA Reading Room: https://www.navair.navy.mil/foia/documents.

The U.S. Navy has formally declassified three now-infamous videos that pilots flying F/A-18 Hornets shot of unidentified flying objects, also referred to as unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), on separate occasions in 2004 and 2015. One of these videos had been floating around online for years, but all three became national news in 2017 and 2018 as part of reporting surrounding the Pentagon's still very enigmatic efforts to study these and other similar incidents, as well as the activities of the private company To The Stars Academy and its founder, former Blink-182 frontman Tom DeLonge.

The first part "whether or not the footage was real" sounds dubious since the USN had already confirmed they are real.

The second part "whether or not there is more to the videos" is also dubious. Official release of the already leaked videos does in no way prove (or disprove) "whether or not there is more to the videos". Witnesses have claimed that they have seen longer videos of higher quality.

I wonder why they did this official release at this point in time? What is the purpose?

COVID-19 exists - pretty certain of that

I agree with this guy - nothing really to see on these vids.

I have seen the "Tic Tac" twice, once flying through a MOA S of KSSC and once from the ground.Other pilots operating around MOAs have seen them. Atc eventually stopped their Q&A routine and simply started saying to remain vis separation. Flat white, featureless about the size of a Lear 25/35 without wings or a tail. Neither were performing any "otherworldly" maneuvers. The 2nd one I saw from the ground, It was moving very fast close to mach and made no sound. That said we once flew 1/2 mile off of a B-2 for 100 miles and all the while ATC was telling me nothing was there and Shaw had no aircraft in the vicinity. This was THREE years before it was publicly announced.

The B-2 was unveiled on the same day the first one moved out of the assembly building. It didn't have it's first flight until 6 months later.

There were no B-2s in existence three years before it was announced.

Context...do they mean before the B-2's existence was publicly known or the revelation of these "tic tac" aerial phenomena by US Navy pilots?

New task force, run by the Navy:

“The Department of Defense established the UAPTF to improve its understanding of, and gain insight into, the nature and origins of UAPs. The mission of the task force is to detect, analyze and catalog UAPs that could potentially pose a threat to U.S. national security,” the Pentagon wrote in a statement late Friday.

“The Department of Defense and the military departments take any incursions by unauthorized aircraft into our training ranges or designated airspace very seriously and examine each report. This includes examinations of incursions that are initially reported as UAP when the observer cannot immediately identify what he or she is observing,” the statement added.
The new task force will be overseen by the Department of the Navy and will report to the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence and Security. The U.S. Navy has previously led efforts to look into unidentified aerial phenomena since the service branch has reported several encounters involving their aircraft.

Will be interesting to see if the F-35 will increase or reduce the number of UFO observations...

This whole "thing" is nothing new (UFOs). You should read about the sightings around our nuclear sites of these objects. Clearly, something is there. What that something is, is open to conjecture and warrants further investigation.

Probably a roving global parliamentary inquiry from the year 2472, trying to figure out why the climate didn't change at all in 360 years of burning ever-increasing amounts of coal, oil and natural gas.

Quite the conundrum.

It would be effortless for such highly advanced space visitors to avoid oversight. I don't buy the smoke and mirrors act.

A take from former USN WSO Ward Carroll.
