2014 Spotlight Web C130 Mockup 1953 001 1267828237 9955
The C-130 mockup arrives in the final assembly building of the then-Lockheed Georgia Company in Marietta, Georgia, in 1953. The 110,000-pound, full-scale wood and metal mockup was constructed at the Lockheed plant in Burbank, California, in 1951 to support development of the YC-130 prototypes. When the program moved to Georgia, the mockup was shipped by barge from Los Angeles through the Panama Canal to the port of Savannah. It was then trucked in pieces with much fanfare—including letting schoolchildren out of class to see it pass by—from the Georgia coast to Marietta. The reassembled mockup was used to fine-tune the Hercules design and test systems for fit. After serving for several years, the mockup was eventually scrapped. [Lockheed photo]
