Willis W. Hawkins worked for Lockheed Corporation for almost fifty years, during which time he led the team that designed the C-130 Hercules in 1951. Among his many career highlights, Hawkins oversaw development of the UGM-27 Polaris, the US Navy's first sea-launched ballistic missile, and headed the then-classified Corona reconnaissance satellite program. He left Lockheed briefly to serve as assistant secretary of the Army, and he started development of what became the M1 Abrams main battle tank. He considered the Hercules one of his greatest successes. In this photo, taken in 2004 several months before his passing at age ninety, Hawkins posed in front of a C-130J Super Hercules belonging to the 146th Airlift Wing, the California Air National Guard unit at Channel Islands ANGB.
