MORRISVILLE, N.C. - A Navy F-18 crashed Friday afternoon near Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

It was not immediately known where the aircraft was based. Military public affairs officials at the Oceana Naval Air Station in Virginia Beach, Va., and Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point in Havelock said they were still gathering details on the incident.

Broadcasts showed the plane engulfed in flames on a runway at the airport, which is in Morrisville, between the cities of Raleigh and Durham. Thick black smoke poured from the aircraft.

It was not known for sure how many people were aboard or whether they escaped, but an eyewitness said he saw a pilot eject from the plane before it crashed.

Andy Palahnuck told News14 Carolina, "We were watching the two F-18s take off. First one took off, and the second one behind it is the one that had the problem."

Palahnuck said the plane had some sort of problem as it came down the runway and that he saw a pilot eject from the craft.

He said the plane never got off the ground before crashing.

The pilot was walking around after ejecting from the plane, apparently not injured, he said.

The pilot is reported in good condition at a local hospital by Pilotonline.com.

There was another F/A-18 lost Mar 24 (Wednesday) off the coast. Pilot rescued. Sometimes that spare engine doesn't seem to help...

From what I see on the news, I don't think the F-18 can be repaired. What a pity, at least the pilot is not seriously injured
