This hasn't been picked up by English outlets yet, so this will have to do. The crash happened during air combat training. Both pilots are conscious, but it will take more time for what exactly happened to be revealed

Glad both crew are OK.

But they've got this all wrapped up, in little more than a month? If so, great. But I've NEVER heard of a like American accident and it's findings in such a short period of time. Then again, I don't know much about accident re-construction. Maybe they do things differently over there..

I find the F-2 a very peculiar aircraft. On the one hand, it seems plenty capable and a nice side kick to Japan's F-15 fleet.I'm sure that like the F-16, it's a great rate machine. The AESA was certainly innovative at the time. But my god, the price... They could have bought a whole lot more modern F-16's, and I fail to see where Japan's indigenous aircraft production capacity increased? They even shelved plans to build the F-35, going instead directly to the source - LM.

In any case, the F-2 should be able to hold its own vs. Chinese J-10's. Matching their advanced Flankers is another story, but their new F-35's should restore their (qualitative) advantage.

>I find the F-2 a very peculiar aircraft.

To be concise, and in case you're unfamiliar with the FS-X (Fighter Support Experimental) project: back in the early 1980s, JASDF planned a high-low combo of jet fighters.

F-15J/DJ as the high interceptor.
FS-X as the low anti-surface attacker, eh, support fighter... because "attacker" didn't sound pacifist.

Before FS-X, JASDF modified their T-2 trainer (two seats) into F-1 fighter (one seat) that could carry two anti-ship missiles.
FS-X was designed to carry four anti-ship missiles, and then-most advanced composite materials and radar.

FS-X concept design had two engines and ventral canards.
As Japan is an island nation, and after JASDF experience with F-86 and F-104 one-engine fighters, they next chose F-4 and F-15 two-engine fighters.

FS-X, like the T-2 and F-1, would be a mostly domestic project.
After Bush replaced Reagan as POTUS, the USA Government "convinced" (read: bullied) Japan to re-negotiate the portion of USA involvement in the project.

2019/06/21, JASDF announced accident report.
Accident during 1 vs 1 combat training.

Accident F-2B front pilot set throttle at minimum output, ascended, and turned left towards another F-2.
After turned left 90 degrees, began to turn right, nose pointed straight up, and began to stall.

Front pilot attempted recover, aircraft inverted, and he could not control.
Back pilot resumed control, attempted recover, body "floated" because aircraft inverted, and could not reach MPO [Manual Pitch Override] switch that switched control stick to manual mode.

Back pilot instructed front pilot to operate front pilot's MPO switch, but front pilot mistook or misunderstood, and operated different switch.
Uncontrollable condition continued, aircraft descended, and back pilot decided eject.

Back pilot ejected, then front pilot ejected, and aircraft crashed.
