VIRGNIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - The Navy said a small part of a training missile fell from an F/A-18C Hornet aircraft as the plane was flying over the intersection of Lynnhaven Drive and Viking Drive in Virginia Beach on Tuesday.

The incident happened around 11:45 a.m. The falling part damaged one unoccupied vehicle. There were no injuries.

According to officials, the part was identified as a wing from a Captive Air Training Missile (CATM). A CATM does not carry any live explosive or motor. The CATM body did not separate from the aircraft, which landed safely at Naval Air Station Oceana.

The aircraft is assigned to Oceana-based Strike Fighter Squadron ONE THREE ONE (VFA-131), the "Wildcats," and was returning from a routine training mission. The pilot was not injured and there was no damage to the aircraft.

In November 2007, a similar incident happened near London Bridge Road. In this incident, a Hornet dropped a practice bomb which crashed into a warehouse.

Then in May 2008, an Oceana fighter dropped a 500 pound laser guided bomb a mile off target in Florida. It sparked a wildfire in a national forest that burned nearly 250 acres.

In all three cases, no one was hurt.

10 On Your Side spoke with the man who owns the truck from Thursday's accident. He said the Navy has agreed to pay for all the damage. He, like so many others, is just glad it hit an object and not a person.

Navy officials said the accident is under investigation.
