I was wondering if anyone knows anything about this clip in a mishap montage video. The video clip in question starts at 1:10 and ends at 1:54.

It appears that the F-4 was shot down by a MANPAD. Does anyone know where the video came from?

It looks like it could be either the Bekaa Valley War, or the Iran-Iraq War. Both places have locations which resemble this.

I used the Windows magnifier on the video--from the way the pixels look those could be huts or tents of some sort, if they're tents, they could be a basecamp of some sort. I can't discern any logical order to the way they're positioned--they seem to be clumped together in one area and then leading off to another area, that would lead me away from it being a military camp, and further evidence that it's either a training camp or (if they're huts of some sort) a civilian village.

Are the rugged parts of Iraq as lush as that? If they aren't that could be another piece of evidence to support the Bekaa.

There's parts of NE Iraq, east of Irbil, and NE of Kirkuk that are very green. The green hills also go across the Iranian border in this area. I'm not sure if the Israelis lost any F-4s in the Bekaa Valley, but I know the Iranians lost several F-4s during the Iran-Iraq War.

I just looked up the Jane's IAF game intro, it said there were no losses to the IAF in the 1982 War--and I think they retired their Phantoms before the 2006 conflict, didn't they?

I can't find a good site with pictures of both the IAF and the IRIAF camo schemes, there are two frames in that video that you can just barely make out where a lighter color--probably a tan--gives way to a darker color--probably green or brown.

I also can't figure out what those houses are--heck, they could be anything from Kurdish to Druze--and that spans the gamut from close to the Med pretty much to Iran. If they're Kurdish, that might rule out Iran--because wasn't Saddam's motivation for Anfal the Kurdish support of Iran?

When Turkey did those airstrikes--were their F-4s involved at all? Because if they were and they lost a jet, we might be looking at the wrong countries.

We can narrow this thing down, it's just a matter of eliminating where it is, I could take this video to a professor at school and ask him about the huts, if he can discern clues from the shape of the buildings, we might get a good clue.

If the IDF/AF had no losses in 82, then I'm thinking that this is the Iran-Iraq War. I know the Iranians lost some F-4s during the war. Here's some further evidence: This clip came from the Iranian "Sacred Defense". Similar terrain in both clips. A group of Iranian soldiers under fire receive air support from Iranian F-5s and an F-4.

Old thread but...

It's not a shoot down video. It is a video of Cope T in the PI. F-4 engine failure to explosion, jet goes out of control and luckily the crew gets out.

Thanks F16guy. Man, the Philippines would've been the last place I'd ever thought of, seeing this clip. You know, from tv shows and movies set in Vietnam, the PI can easlily pose for 'Nam, but who knew that they had any places that resemble Iran?

Definitely an out of the ordinary mishap, but I'm glad the crew punched out.

That's something that I've heard Steve Ritchie say more than once about the F-4, that he never heard about any F-4 simply blowing up on the spot. He said usually some debris would come off of the jet, and you could stay with it until you could either get it on the deck, or needed to punch out, but you weren't in much danger of it just blowing up when something happened. That clip showed exactly what he was talking about.

You know, it never seemed like you ever had enough fuel in the F-4 for it to explode.

:D

Well, I too have heard airplanes just don't explode, but know that is not true having seen and investigated one at Luke that did just that on the runway at power up. Amazing what can happen when a fuel cell ruptures with some help from other components.

If you look at the video you'll see the smokey SAM's that had been launched and the camera operator was damn lucky to get the video, and the crew looks like they went on Mr Toads wild ride. I think they are very lucky.

That's why I thought it was a MANPAD at first. A couple of the smokey SAMs had already been launched, and the launcher was hidden by some shrubbery, so all I saw was an irratic, spiraling smoke trail.

When the last SAM launches, was when the Rhino actually caught fire. The fire trail that it left, and the subsequent loss of control looked a lot like they'd actually been shot down by something.

D@mn good footage shot by the camera man. It was a pretty wild ride.

I saw this video on a program on Discovery, they claimed it was a flare that exploded before it was released that caused the accident.

When and where was that accident? I'm guessing Farnborough around 1980?

Huggy, I believe that the Warthog mishap was at the 1977 Paris Air Show.
