The A-4F SUPER FOX must have been Awesome: http://skyhawk.org/article/mongoose-super-fox One note not at this LINK
Adversary Skyhawk used as MiG-17 emulator by ‘Zoo’ [Gary Rezeau] from YAHOO SkyhawkStudyGroup E-mail:

“The USN/USMC used various models of the A-4 in their Adversary programs. The USN squadrons were VF-43/45/126/127, VCF-13, (maybe 12 too?), and the Top Gun/Have Gun programs used these A-4s as part of their training syllabus. I am not sure what weapons school you are referring to? I am not aware of the USAF using A-4s this way, but there were many combined air warfare exercises that included USN adversary A-4 participation. They were frequent players at Red Flag exercises.

USN Fighter Weapons School was a comprehensive syllabus that covered advanced tactics training with the usual classroom instruction and flight simulator training. The flight syllabus was tailored to the type of fighter aircraft flown. These fighter crews being trained flew against the adversary pilots from any of the adversary squadrons participating.

Typically, the VF-43 at NAS Oceana & VF-126 at NAS Miramar did most of this work. But the goal of the Top Gun/Have Gun program was to train a select number of fleet squadron pilots and NFOs to return to their squadron and continue the ACM/DACM training of their squadron's pilots.

The A-4 was an almost perfect MIG-17 substitute in every way. Size, and maneuverability were very similar and the Specific Power envelopes were very close. Although the MIG-17 had A/B and the A-4 did not, a mostly clean A-4E/F could emulate the MIG very well. The Mongoose A-4 had the P-408 engine installed, no avionics hump, as much hardware removed as possible to lighten the aircraft, the slats wired permanently up; and was an amazing performer with a greater than 1:1 thrust to weight ratio.”

I agree with spurts. It pretty much looks like the A-4 driver is 'baiting' the F-14....he knows the Tomcat is fast by the wing sweep, so he floats the left turn, intentionally 'losing' some angles to the left with the full intention of reversing right and going single circle, converting those 'lost' angles to advantageous angles to the right as the the Tomcat screams by.

IMHO there were certainly no better BFMers than the Top Gun A-4 drivers at the time.

I also was of the opinion having fought both the F-14s at Miramar (VF-213 and some others) and the Miramar VF-301 and VF-302 Reserves in F-4Ss, that the Reserves put up a tougher fight BFM-wise at the time. Those crusty old airline pilot part-timers were scary good.

(edit: BTW even though it's a photo op, it certainly conveys the reality of that type of situation.)

Circa 1979 documentary about the RAN FAA at that time aboard HMAS Melbourne during an exercise with New Zealand. It is sometimes very scripted with radio calls NO ONE would make but are there for the film, with some edits that are ???

However one may see the A4G in action along with the S2EG Trackers, Sea King ASW Helos and Wessex converted to SAR.

Great Scooter videos: Gives a walk-around to some extent. And shows just how small that Skyhawk cockpit is.

Thanks Spaz - you might need to start a new PDF soon - don't they only go to 5GB?

Or maybe you just need to write a book.

Thanks to you also. 5Gb? Where did you see/hear that please. In the past I've regularly (over fifteen years or so) run into 'not being able to 'edit the PDF in any way shape or form problem'. I could describe how this issue has been overcome but by the time I explain the universe will have collapsed into a singularity. Really any causes are mostly unknown except by chance or a new version of Acrobat released somehow overcomes whatever is causing the blockage. We'll see....

Thanks - yes good videos describing the A-4 in detail. I may have some minor issues with some descriptions but overall they are well done. As for the 'small cockpit': it was spacious compared to the side by side seats in the Vampire trainer.

Really we were shoulder to shoulder, learning how to have shoulder bones co-equal side by side & no farting of course....

I cant find a definite answer but I can see if I can get an answer from Adobe. The size of that file concerned me you might get it corrupted - maybe things have moved on a bit!
