Date : Sep 28 1980
4 Su-22 - Squadron 109 Iraqi AF
Home Base : Alwehda AB near Basrah
Loads : 4 1100lb bombs + 2 EFT for each aircraft
Target : Iranian army base south of Dezful city - Ammo and weapons stores north of Dezful City.
Mission : all aircrafts took off and started their low altitude flying .... Distance to target 110nm ... 2 min. From reaching the intended destination ... The pilots suprised that they are flying over empty flat area and no city below or infront of them !!! It was clear the coordinates were wrong because of the old maps and equipments they have ... The formation leader ordered left turn in one attempt to find the target or to abort the mission ... And they do found the city which lies in shallow depression with hills surrounding it ... Hight tension wires can be seen clearly ..... The formation broke up : No.1-2 went for the army base south of the city and No.3-4 for the ammo depots and weapon stores north of the city .... AAA started firing ... All aircrafts throw their bombs on targets ... The formation leader while turning to egress the area noticed a big Radar dish over a near by hill ... He attacked it with 160 bullets of his 30 mm guns and the Radar destroyed.... The 2 northern bound aircrafts joined the 2 southern and all returned to home base safely.
