How many samples do SAR and Doppler processing require?

Synthetic-aperture radar and Doppler filtering both require taking many returns of of the same target and turning them into a sum greater than its parts.
Is there a number of samples below which it becomes much more difficult to use these techniques? It seems like you really wouldn't get much of a SAR image or Doppler radar if it only got 4 returns to process so it must be higher than that. But it doesn't seem like you'd need hundreds although having hundreds would improve accuracy.
