I did not vote for that, but not many real possibilities. I could see a case for F-16 Block 70 if F-35 wasn't available. Russian aircraft are out of the question and I really doubt we'd go for Chinese aircraft. KAI-FX is too troubled and might not see service ever. TAI TF-X is also not really a possible option for many reasons.
Well, at least three members had an alternative....

Griphen ; Obsolete at concept and even more so today. No big production run, and has not proven anything yet. They tried to sell it, then the UK tried to sell it, and now finally, they have found some victims for a limited production run.
F-18 : So obsolete it is obsolete to say it has become obsolete.
Rafale : When you have spare money to spend and a bank to pay for the spare parts.
Tiffy's come with a cordless drill to redrill all holes to correct diameter and some oversize bolts. Then try to beat the Germans and get more then 4 (out of 128) combat ready.
F-16 could be a cheaper alternative, but F-35 has my vote.

The F-35 is worth 20+ Gripens. So, please define "too expensive". Especially, in the context of Russia as a major threat to the much smaller Finland...
