Fatal crash of C-130H at Montijo Airbase

July 11, 2016 (by Asif Shamim) - A C-130H Hercules of the Portuguese Air Force has caught fire and crashed at Montijo military base in Portugal. Three people were killed in the accident, with injuries to four others according to an official press release from the Air Force.

The military transport (Believed to be #16804) from the 501st Squadron known as the 'Bisons' was taking off for a training flight when it caught fire on Monday around 12:20hrs local time, Portugal's RTP broadcaster reported. Local Press further reported there were seven on-board.

The Air Force released an official statement later which confirmed that three crew had died, one seriously injured and three with sustained minor injuries. Unconfirmed reports in the media say the three who died were two Captains and a Lieutenant Colonel.

Multiple emergency teams scrambled to the site of the accident to assist in the recovery of the crew. The seriously injured was taken to the Burns Unit at the Hospital of St. Joseph in Lisbon.

The accident investigation will be conducted by the Central Commission of Investigação Air Force.

The statement went onto say the Air Force was in a "moment of deep sorrow, our thoughts are with families and friends of our comrades". The Air Force is now in a state of mourning.
